Where it came from
Auratouched Mage was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase expansion, a set designed to facilitate a multiplayer Magic: The Gathering variant that introduces planar travel into the game. The card was specifically featured in the 'Chaos Reigns' deck, which focused on the five-color Alara shard of Jund and utilized mechanics centered around cascading spells and permanent-based buffs.
The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a prominent illustrator known for his work on The Sandman series. Dringenberg’s depiction of the mage leans into the ethereal, high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the era, emphasizing the character's connection to aura enchantments. Mechanically, the card allows players to tutor for enchantments, making it a staple for Commander decks that rely on aura-based synergies.
