Where it came from
The Enigma Sphinx was released in the Planechase 2012 expansion as part of the 'Chaos Reigns' deck. This set was designed to supplement the multiplayer format introduced in 2009, which utilizes oversized cards to represent different planes of existence. The inclusion of the Sphinx reflected the set’s focus on high-mana cost creatures with powerful triggered abilities, designed to create chaotic, unpredictable gameplay states typical of the Planechase format.
The card’s visual identity was crafted by illustrator Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, atmospheric style often emphasizes fluid, otherworldly lighting and ethereal subjects. In this depiction, the Sphinx is rendered as a manifestation of arcane energy, aligning with the card's cascade mechanic which rewards players for playing expensive spells. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of control-oriented archetypes for its ability to generate significant card advantage in the late game.
