Where it came from
The Auton Soldier card, numbered 36, is part of the extensive Doctor Who trading card series depicting the iconic antagonists of the long-running British science fiction program. Autons first appeared in the 1970 serial Spearhead from Space, serving as plastic-based drones controlled by the collective consciousness known as the Nestene Consciousness. Their design, characterized by an uncanny, expressionless appearance and the ability to conceal weaponry within their hands, was intended to exploit the primal fear of inanimate objects coming to life.
This specific card entry captures the eerie aesthetic of the Auton, drawing from the show's production history where these figures were initially created using mannequin parts. The collectible series aims to document the evolution of the Doctor's adversaries, and the Auton card remains a staple for fans of the early Pertwee era. It is recognized for its contribution to the legacy of practical effects in British television, highlighting a creature that transformed everyday store-window displays into a source of enduring cinematic dread.
