Where it came from
The Avalanche of Sector 7 card was released as part of the Final Fantasy Commander set, a collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and the iconic Final Fantasy franchise. Designed to represent the eco-terrorist group Avalanche from Final Fantasy VII, the card mechanically captures the team's commitment to disrupting Shinra Electric Power Company operations. The set was conceived to bridge the gap between tactical trading card gameplay and the narrative-rich history of Square Enix’s flagship series.
The artwork for this piece was commissioned to evoke the gritty, industrial atmosphere of Midgar, utilizing a color palette dominated by steel blues and harsh industrial lighting. The designers aimed to emphasize the collaborative nature of the group, with the card’s abilities reflecting tactical coordination rather than individual power. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players for its thematic accuracy and the nostalgic visual cues that pay homage to the original 1997 game aesthetics.
