Where it came from
Avalanche Riders was originally printed as a rare card in the 1997 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a versatile utility creature, allowing players to destroy a land upon entering the battlefield while maintaining an aggressive presence with its haste ability. Its efficiency made it a staple in competitive red-based tempo decks of the era, where disrupting an opponent's mana development was a critical strategic maneuver.
The 1999 World Championship Decks product featured exact replicas of the decks used by the top players at the world tournament. This specific version of Avalanche Riders, identified by the mlp74 collector number, represents a card chosen by a high-level competitor for their sideboard or main deck. These decks were produced with special gold-bordered backs to prevent them from being used in official sanctioned tournament play, serving instead as a commemorative snapshot of competitive history and a tool for players to study professional-level deck construction.
