Where it came from
Avarice Totem was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion, the final set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set focused on the artifacts and metallic landscape of the artificial plane of Mirrodin. This specific card represents the set's thematic exploration of artifact-centric gameplay, designed to offer players a unique, repeatable mechanism for trading control of non-land permanents in exchange for mana.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the dark, intricate aesthetic typical of the Mirrodin environment. Staples utilized a blend of mechanical complexity and atmospheric shadow to reflect the card's namesake of greed and transactional exchange. Upon its release, it was noted primarily as a niche utility card in Commander and casual formats, valued by players for its ability to disrupt board states rather than for its competitive dominance.
