Where it came from
Avarax was originally printed in the 2002 set Onslaught, designed as a staple of the red color pie that rewarded players for running multiple copies of the same creature. Its design centers on the 'haste' ability combined with a discard-for-card-advantage mechanic, a quintessential aggressive strategy for red decks during the early 2000s. The card quickly became a favorite in limited formats and casual play for its ability to maintain board pressure.
The version from Dominaria Remastered, released in 2023, serves as a retrospective inclusion that gathers iconic cards from the history of the Dominaria plane. The reprint features the original illustration by Dave Dorman, who aimed to capture the visceral, draconic fury of the creature. Upon its return in this curated set, it was received as a nostalgic nod to the 'Onslaught' block, appealing to long-time players who valued the card's history and functional utility.
