Provenance

Where it came from

Aven Augur was released in 2007 as part of the Future Sight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was conceptually daring, designed to showcase cards from potential future timelines of the game, including mechanics that had not yet been introduced. The card represents the bird-folk race known as the Aven, a staple of the plane of Otaria, and was specifically created to utilize the 'fateseal' mechanic, which allowed a player to manipulate the top of an opponent's library.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Nils Hamm, whose atmospheric and painterly style helped define the distinct, somewhat ethereal aesthetic of the Future Sight set. Hamm focused on the avian physiology of the subject while integrating the mysterious, time-warped framing elements characteristic of the set's unique card frame. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, appreciated by players interested in control-heavy strategies and those intrigued by the experimental design direction of the era.
