What it does

Nonbasic lands are Mountains.

Tidal forces of the blood moon wrench and buckle the land, drawing monoliths of stone and soil toward the flaming orb.

Provenance

Where it came from

Magus of the Moon was released in 2007 as part of the Future Sight expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a creature-based homage to the iconic and powerful Blood Moon enchantment, which had been a staple of competitive play since its introduction in The Dark in 1994. The card was part of a cycle of creatures in Future Sight intended to color-shift or recreate the effects of famous artifacts and enchantments from the game's history onto permanents that could attack and block.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Stephen Toman, who depicted the titular Magus holding a staff glowing with the same celestial energy seen in the original Blood Moon art. The card was met with significant interest from tournament players, as its creature type allowed for different methods of removal and synergy compared to the original enchantment. It quickly became a foundational element in 'Red Prison' style decks in various formats, serving as a critical tool for manipulating non-basic land configurations.
