Where it came from
Aven Initiate was originally introduced in the Amonkhet set in 2017, designed to represent the avian warriors of the desert city-state. The card reflects the flavor of the set, where initiates undergo rigorous physical and mental trials to ascend to a higher state of existence, a process often depicted through the game's mechanics of 'eternalizing' or otherwise modifying creatures.
The 2022 Double Masters version, featuring artwork by Anna Steinbauer, serves as a high-quality reprint that revitalizes the card for the secondary market. Steinbauer’s illustration emphasizes the ethereal, regal nature of the Aven, utilizing clean lines and a palette consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The reprint was well-received by players who appreciated the refreshed visual treatment of a functional utility creature.
