Aven Windreader

Aven Windreader was originally printed in the Onslaught expansion in 2002, representing the bird-folk Aven of the Otaria continent. The card was selected for the Ninth Edition core set, which served as a bridge for players between older card mechanics and the Modern era of Magic: The Gathering. By including it in a core set, Wizards of the Coast maintained the creature’s role as a reliable common-rarity utility piece that allowed players to scout the top card of their library, emphasizing the strategic focus on deck manipulation common to blue-aligned cards of that era.

The artwork for this version was provided by the renowned illustrator Greg Hildebrandt, one half of the famous Brothers Hildebrandt. Known for his lush, detailed style and iconic contributions to fantasy art—most notably the early Lord of the Rings calendars—Hildebrandt brought a grounded, painterly aesthetic to the Aven. His design depicts the creature in a stoic, observant pose, reflecting the card’s mechanical purpose as a watchful guardian. The illustration is widely regarded for its classic high-fantasy sensibility, fitting seamlessly into the aesthetic transition of the game during the mid-2000s.
