Form of the Dragon

Form of the Dragon was first released in the Scourge set in 2003 before being reprinted as part of the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. It represents a unique top-down design concept where a player physically transforms into a dragon, shifting their life total to five and granting them the ability to deal five damage to creatures or players each turn. The card was designed to capture the high-fantasy essence of Magic: The Gathering, offering a dramatic, high-risk gameplay experience that rewards players for embracing a singular, powerful identity on the battlefield.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was illustrated by Thomas M. Baxa, a veteran artist known for his dark and visceral style. Baxa’s illustration depicts the grueling, transformative process of a mage becoming a dragon, emphasizing the physical toll and mystical intensity of the spell. Upon its release, the card became a favorite among casual players for its sheer spectacle and unconventional mechanical structure, cementing its reputation as a memorable piece of Magic’s history.
