Avenger of Zendikar

Avenger of Zendikar was first printed in the 2009 Zendikar expansion, designed to anchor the set's focus on land-based mechanics like landfall. It was created as a powerful top-end creature that rewards players for building their deck around utility lands, effectively populating the battlefield with Plant tokens proportional to the player's land count. This specific iteration, collector number 1 from the 2015 Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi, was released to provide players with a ready-made conflict narrative between the plane's inhabitants and the cosmic horrors of the Eldrazi.

The card's artwork, illustrated by Kev Walker, captures the essence of Zendikar’s volatile, sentient nature by depicting the Avenger as a looming, arboreal titan. Walker’s depiction highlights the symbiotic relationship between the vegetation and the mana of the plane. Upon its debut, the card was widely received as a definitive finisher for green-aligned decks, praised by the community for its ability to stabilize a board state and apply pressure simultaneously, securing its place as a staple in various Commander and casual constructed formats.
