Where it came from
Avenger of Zendikar was originally released as a mythic rare in the 2010 Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card was intended to serve as a powerful late-game threat that rewarded players for focusing on land-based strategies, a core theme of the Zendikar plane. Its ability to create a swarm of Plant tokens based on the number of lands controlled quickly established it as a staple in green-based ramp decks across multiple formats.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his distinctively gritty and high-contrast style. Walker sought to capture the overwhelming, elemental nature of the Zendikar landscape reclaiming its territory, portraying the creature as a towering, vine-entangled entity. Upon release, the card received widespread praise from the player base for its balanced design and its role as a satisfying 'top-end' card that could single-handedly swing the tide of a match.
