Provenance

Where it came from

Avenging Hunter was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing directly from the lore of Dungeons and Dragons, the card was designed to integrate the 'initiative' mechanic into the commander format, allowing players to delve through the Undercity dungeon upon entering the battlefield. This set aimed to bridge the gap between traditional tabletop roleplaying and collectible card gaming, placing an emphasis on thematic exploration and social play.

The card’s illustration, rendered by artist Johannes Voss, captures a rugged, tactical aesthetic consistent with the ranger archetype found in the Forgotten Realms setting. The design reflects a shift in modern Magic development toward cards that provide immediate value and board presence, earning it a reputation as a staples-level card in green-based decks. It was well-received by the player base for its efficiency and its ability to introduce a dynamic, rotating objective to the multiplayer experience.
