Where it came from
Awaken the Bear was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set focuses on the plane of Tarkir, a world defined by the influence of five warring clans, each inspired by a different aspect of draconic lore. As a common green instant, this card was designed to support the set's aggressive creature-based strategies by providing both a power boost and temporary trample to a target creature, fitting the thematic 'Temur' clan's emphasis on primal ferocity.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. In designing the piece, Velinov focused on the visceral transformation of a warrior drawing upon the spiritual strength of a bear, utilizing the bold, earthy color palette characteristic of the set's wilderness-dwelling clans. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats, where its low mana cost and utility made it a reliable choice for players needing an efficient combat trick to push through damage.
