Where it came from
Awaken the Erstwhile was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set for Magic: The Gathering. This sorcery card, associated with the black-aligned Cult of Rakdos, depicts a macabre scene of undead figures emerging from the earth, fitting the chaotic and morbid aesthetic of the guild. It was designed to function as a high-cost discard effect that rewards players for replenishing the board with zombie tokens, reflecting the guild's penchant for destructive, high-stakes trade-offs.
The artwork for the card was created by Svetlin Velinov, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his expressive character designs. His illustration focuses on the visceral resurrection of the restless dead, utilizing a dark, high-contrast color palette that defines the gothic cityscape of the plane of Ravnica. While the card saw limited competitive play, it remains a thematic staple for collectors interested in the lore and visual storytelling of the Ravnica block.
