Where it came from
Backfire was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the game's fourth major set, Legends was notable for introducing the concept of multi-colored cards and legendary creatures, significantly expanding the strategic depth and complexity of the trading card game. The expansion was developed during a period of rapid growth for Wizards of the Coast, intended to provide players with more diverse deck-building options and mechanics that would reward long-term gameplay.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the game's early history. Rush utilized a distinct, illustrative style that defined the aesthetic of early Magic sets, emphasizing high-fantasy motifs and evocative, symbolic imagery. Backfire specifically was designed as an enchantment that punished opponents for attacking, fitting into the set's broader design goal of creating reactive defensive spells that challenged conventional combat strategies.
