What it does

tap: Change the text of target white enchantment you control that doesn't have cumulative upkeep by replacing all instances of one color word with another. (For example, you may change "black creatures can't attack" to "blue creatures can't attack.") That enchantment gains "Cumulative upkeep 1 generic mana." (At the beginning of its controller's upkeep, that player puts an age counter on it, then sacrifices it unless they pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

Provenance

Where it came from

The Balduvian Shaman was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for introducing a thematic, snowy arctic environment, shifting the game's aesthetic toward colder, more rugged landscapes. Designed to be a standalone expansion that players could draft and build decks from entirely on its own, Ice Age marked a significant period of growth for the game as it sought to expand its lore beyond the original Alpha and Beta core sets.

The card features the distinct, detailed illustration style characteristic of the era, crafted by artist Anson Maddocks. Maddocks, a foundational artist for the early game, focused on conveying the primitive and mystical nature of the Balduvian tribes, who were depicted as rugged warriors living in the harsh glacial plains of Dominaria. The design reflects the game's early efforts to integrate mechanical utility, such as protection against specific color-based threats, with the gritty, high-fantasy tone established by Wizards of the Coast during the mid-nineties.
