Where it came from
Ball Lightning first appeared in the 1994 expansion set The Dark, designed by Christopher Rush to capture the essence of a fleeting, volatile magical strike. The card introduced a unique mechanics-driven personality to Magic: The Gathering, where its extreme power was balanced by the requirement that it be sacrificed at the end of every turn, cementing its reputation as a quintessential red-mana glass cannon.
The Masters 25 version, released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game, features the iconic original illustration by Christopher Rush. By reprinting this specific art within a curated set, Wizards of the Coast intended to pay homage to the game's foundational era, allowing players to utilize a piece of design history that helped define the aggressive playstyle of red-aligned decks for decades.
