Barl's Cage

Barl's Cage was released in 1995 as part of the Chronicles expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's early history because it consisted entirely of reprints from previous, often out-of-print sets, specifically serving to make harder-to-find cards more accessible to players. Barl's Cage originally debuted in the Antiquities set, where it drew inspiration from the set's overarching theme of ancient, archeological discoveries and the remnants of the Brothers' War.

The card's illustration was created by Tom Wänerstrand, who contributed numerous pieces to the early years of the game. His depiction of the Cage leans into the industrial, scavenged aesthetic synonymous with the artifact-heavy lore of Antiquities. While the card is often remembered for its mechanical complexity and high mana cost, which limited its competitive utility, it remains a notable example of the early, experimental design philosophy that characterized the game's inaugural years.
