Where it came from
Baru, Fist of Krosa was released in 2007 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Future Sight. This set was unique for its exploration of potential future mechanics and temporal shifts within the game's lore, with Baru representing a key figure in the Krosan forest's history. The card was designed to highlight the grandeur theme, rewarding players for playing lands, which reflects the character's connection to the land and his status as a legendary protector.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy illustrator whose work is known for its atmospheric depth. Briclot depicted Baru in a dynamic, powerful stance that emphasizes his role as a physical combatant. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on green-aligned commander decks, where his ability to grant trample and boost creatures upon land drops became a staple for aggressive, land-focused strategies.
