Baru, Wurmspeaker

Baru, Wurmspeaker was introduced in the Dominaria United Commander set, released in 2022 to coincide with the main expansion's return to the game's foundational plane. The card was designed as a legendary creature to serve as a commander for green-aligned decks centered on the Wurm creature type, aiming to provide mechanical support for a historically under-represented tribe. It functions as a thematic callback to the character Baru, Fist of Krosa, while shifting the focus toward the massive scale and stompy playstyle characteristic of Wurm-focused strategies.

The artwork was created by illustrator Antonio José Manzanedo, who rendered the character with a sense of commanding presence consistent with the aesthetic of Dominaria's diverse inhabitants. As part of a secondary Commander release, the design was intended to offer players a flavorful, niche build-around option that rewards the deployment of high-cost creatures. Within the broader Magic: The Gathering community, the card is recognized as a specialty piece designed for casual, tribal-focused deck building rather than competitive constructed play.
