Where it came from
Basri, Devoted Paladin was introduced in the Core Set 2021 release as a signature planeswalker card designed to showcase the identity of the white color in Magic: The Gathering. As a new character at the time of his debut, Basri Ket was envisioned as a loyal and noble warrior from the plane of Amonkhet, emphasizing themes of soldier synergy and board presence through his ability to create tokens and bolster his allies.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who aimed to capture Basri’s calm, tactical demeanor amidst the heat of battle. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid mid-range tool for aggressive white decks, praised for its efficiency in maintaining pressure on the battlefield without overshadowing more complex high-cost planeswalkers.
