Where it came from
Bat Colony was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It was designed as a common-rarity creature card to support the set's tribal synergies, specifically focusing on the bat creature type which plays a central role in the subterranean ecosystem of the plane of Ixalan. The design team sought to capture the swarming nature of these creatures through a mechanics-based approach that rewards players for accumulating multiple bat units on the battlefield.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to evoke a sense of claustrophobic atmosphere within the deep, cavernous environments that define the set's aesthetic. The art style leans into the fantasy-horror elements of the Ixalan setting, emphasizing the shadowed, organic textures of the colony's roost. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on limited-format drafting, where its ability to scale in power based on board state proved to be a reliable and thematic inclusion for black-aligned decks.
