Provenance

Where it came from

The Bat token was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to represent the creature type generated by various cards in the set, such as 'Investigator's Journal' or 'Saryth, the Viper's Fang', which utilize Bats to populate the battlefield. The expansion leaned heavily into gothic horror tropes, drawing inspiration from classic monster cinema and the eerie, autumnal atmosphere of the Innistrad plane.

The art for this token was created by Greg Staples, an illustrator known for his long-standing work with Wizards of the Coast. Staples employed a moody, atmospheric style that reflects the set's focus on darkness and nocturnal themes, emphasizing the uncanny nature of the creatures through sharp silhouettes and muted, earthy tones. Like many token cards of the era, it was received as a functional necessity for players, appreciated for its clear artistic contribution to the immersive world-building of the expansion.
