Provenance

Where it came from

The bat'leth, or 'sword of honor,' was created by Dan Curry for Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was developed to provide the Klingon culture with a unique, culturally specific weapon that would appear formidable and authentic to the series' evolving lore. Inspired by ancient Chinese crescent-shaped weapons, the design features curved blades and spiked points, requiring actors to undergo specialized training to handle the prop effectively on screen.

The prop became an iconic symbol of Klingon heritage throughout the franchise's history. While the original production pieces were crafted from various materials like fiberglass and resin for safety, the bat'leth's aesthetic was intended to reflect the aggression and traditionalist values of the Klingon Empire. Its popularity among fans led to widespread merchandising, with various replicas being produced to satisfy the demand for high-quality prop representations.
