What it does

2 generic mana: Target creature gains banding until end of turn. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding a player controls are blocking or being blocked by a creature, that player divides that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Provenance

Where it came from

The Baton of Morale was released in June 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Ice Age was the first expansion set designed to be playable as a standalone game, featuring a thematic focus on a harsh, post-apocalyptic glacial world. The set was intended to offer a deeper, more strategic card pool for players, distancing itself from the erratic balance of the earliest releases.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Amy Weber, one of the original core artists for the game. Her design for the Baton of Morale aligns with the set's high-fantasy, gritty aesthetic, portraying the artifact as a functional tool of tactical reinforcement. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued more for its specific interaction mechanics within group-combat scenarios than for high-level competitive play, where it largely remained an obscure addition to the game's expansive history.
