Where it came from
Battle Hymn was released in 2022 as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a curated collection of Magic: The Gathering cards featuring unique, unconventional artwork often created by guest illustrators. This specific version was included in the 'Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa' drop, which sought to bring the distinct, ink-wash aesthetic associated with the Metal Gear Solid franchise into the realm of fantasy card game art.
Yoji Shinkawa, the renowned artist known for his conceptual designs and character illustrations in video games, applied his signature minimalist style and expressive linework to the card. By stripping away traditional high-fantasy ornamentation in favor of sharp, monochrome compositions, the design emphasizes the urgency and kinetic energy of the card's function. The release was received with significant enthusiasm by both gaming enthusiasts and art collectors, who noted how well Shinkawa’s gritty, sketch-like technical style translated onto the card frame.
