Where it came from
Battle Hymn was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, specifically centering on the return of the archangel Avacyn. This card was designed as a red sorcery intended to reward players for filling the battlefield with creatures, drawing mechanical inspiration from older, iconic ritual effects that provide temporary mana bursts.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who contributed extensively to the Innistrad block. Staples sought to capture the fervor and desperate intensity of the humans living on the plane, illustrating a charging horde empowered by their newfound faith. Upon its release, the card became a notable inclusion in aggressive red decks, particularly in the Commander format, where it serves as a powerful engine for decks capable of generating high creature counts.
