Provenance

Where it came from

Battle Screech was released in May 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore the mechanics of graveyard interaction and threshold, shifting the game's tone toward a darker, more visceral aesthetic following the conclusion of the long-running Weatherlight saga.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who employed a dynamic, painterly style to capture the chaotic nature of the spell. The design intended to offer white-aligned players a rare form of board presence and aggressive utility, allowing them to create a swarm of Spirit tokens. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats and its versatility in Constructed play, becoming a staple for white-based aggressive strategies of the era.
