Beast Within

Beast Within was originally introduced in the 2011 set New Phyrexia, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team to provide green with a flexible, albeit drawback-heavy, removal spell. By allowing a player to destroy any permanent in exchange for giving an opponent a 3/3 Beast token, the card established itself as a staple of Commander and eternal formats for its unique utility. When it was reprinted in the 2018 set Battlebond, it featured new artwork by Svetlin Velinov, who leaned into the chaotic, transformative nature of the card’s effect to match the set’s focus on cooperative multiplayer dynamics.

The Battlebond iteration of Beast Within is noted for its clean visual representation of the spell's core mechanic. Svetlin Velinov’s illustration captures the visceral moment of a permanent being repurposed into a beastly entity, a design direction intended to clarify the card's function for players in the heat of a game. Upon release, this reprint was well-received by the player base for maintaining the card's essential utility while providing a refreshing aesthetic update that aligned with the two-headed giant format showcased throughout the Battlebond expansion.
