Where it came from
Because I Have Willed It was released in 2017 as part of the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set, a standalone multiplayer product designed to emulate the experience of facing off against a powerful villain. The scheme card format, originally introduced in the 2010 Archenemy release, was reimagined here to center specifically on the iconic planeswalker Nicol Bolas, casting him as the primary antagonist in a unique, asymmetric gameplay mode.
The card features artwork by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Designed to represent the raw, reality-warping power of the titular villain, the card’s illustration emphasizes Bolas’s imposing presence and influence over the Multiverse. Upon its release, the set was noted for its thematic cohesion and for providing players with an accessible, narrative-driven way to utilize high-stakes mechanics in a casual group environment.
