Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2017 as part of the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set, this card serves as a specialized scheme card intended for use in the Archenemy multiplayer format. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, these cards represent the powerful machinations of the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas, designed to grant the archenemy significant advantages to balance the inherent disadvantage of facing multiple opponents simultaneously.

The art and mechanics of the scheme reflect the arrogant and demanding nature of Nicol Bolas, focusing on themes of subservience and dominance. As part of a supplemental product meant to revitalize the Archenemy format, the design team aimed to balance chaotic, game-altering effects with the narrative flavor of the Grixis-aligned villain, resulting in a card that forces opponents to choose between sacrificing their own resources or suffering life loss.
