Where it came from
Begin the Invasion was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set, a supplemental product designed to accompany the core Magic: The Gathering expansion depicting a multiversal war against the Phyrexians. The card serves as a thematic representation of the initial staging phase of the Phyrexian assault on various planes, mechanic-wise functioning as a sorcery that reinforces the set's focus on large-scale battle and tactical board presence.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan. The design process for this set prioritized a sense of scale and dread, reflecting the catastrophic nature of the Phyrexian invasion. The piece was received by players as a functional support card within the Commander format, noted for its ability to generate momentum during the mid-to-late game stages, and is often included in decks that utilize green mana ramp and aggressive creature strategies.
