Where it came from
Begin the Invasion was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to accompany the main March of the Machine expansion, which concluded the multi-year Phyrexians arc of the game's overarching storyline. The card functions as a sorcery that represents the scale of the mechanical threat posed by the invaders, specifically focusing on the moment of entry and mobilization across the multiverse.
The card’s visual design is the work of artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a stark, metallic aesthetic to reflect the cold, assimilating nature of the Phyrexian faction. The imagery is intended to convey an overwhelming sense of industrial dread, aligning with the narrative stakes established by Wizards of the Coast for this expansion. It was received by players as a thematic utility card, noted for its effectiveness in decks that prioritize wide-reaching board presence and synergy with the set's unique mechanics.
