Where it came from
Behold the Beyond was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's narrative focus on the encroaching madness caused by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card depicts a character undergoing a terrifying, transformative cosmic epiphany, aligning with the block's themes of psychological and physical corruption.
The illustration was created by artist Daarken, known for a dark, visceral style that complements the grim aesthetic of the Innistrad setting. Design-wise, the card functions as a powerful, high-mana sorcery that allows players to discard their hand to tutor for three specific cards, mechanically representing the overwhelming and chaotic acquisition of forbidden knowledge. It was received as a niche but impactful card, noted for its high-risk, high-reward playstyle in combo-oriented decks.
