Where it came from
Behold the Beyond is a rare promotional variant from the Shadows over Innistrad set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2016. The card is part of a series of promotional items distributed through various tournament play incentives and event-specific kits, reflecting the gothic horror aesthetic that defined the Innistrad block. It was designed to provide players with a visually distinct version of the powerful sorcery card, which mechanically represents a desperate, transformative bargain within the game's dark narrative lore.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by Tyler Jacobson, who was tasked with capturing the frantic, otherworldly transformation central to the card's theme. Jacobson's design emphasizes the eerie, eldritch atmosphere of the setting, utilizing a color palette and composition that aligns with the set's focus on madness and cosmic threats. Upon its release, the promo version was well-regarded by players for its atmospheric aesthetic, standing out in the competitive scene as a collectible representation of the set's iconic dark fantasy storytelling.
