Belligerent Hatchling

Belligerent Hatchling was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide set, the second expansion in the Shadowmoor block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the concept of a world caught in an eternal, transformative twilight, emphasizing the transition between day and night cycles within the game's mechanics. The Hatchling specifically highlights the set's focus on hybrid mana costs, which allowed players to cast the creature using either red or green mana, reflecting the shifting nature of the setting.

The card features illustration by Steve Argyle, a prolific artist in the game's history known for his distinct, expressive character work. Argyle sought to capture the aggressive, infantile energy of the creature, depicting a small but menacing dragon-like entity that embodies the chaotic, primal forces thematic to the set.
