Where it came from
The Final Fantasy Tokens series emerged during the late 1990s as part of a wave of promotional merchandise celebrating the series' transition into three-dimensional graphics. These tokens were produced to provide fans with tactile, collectible representations of the various creatures and characters found within the game world. They reflect the aesthetic shift of the era, focusing on iconic character designs that had recently become global pop-culture staples.
The bird token, numbered 16, depicts one of the avian creatures that populate the environments of the franchise. The design process for these collectibles prioritized portability and visual clarity, often utilizing simplified line art or key frames derived from existing promotional materials. While these sets were initially intended as modest side items for younger players, they have since been recontextualized by hobbyists as nostalgic snapshots of early Square Enix branding efforts.
