Darkstar

Darkstar originates from the Final Fantasy promotional token series, a collection of supplemental game pieces released during the late 1990s and early 2000s to coincide with the height of the franchise's popularity in international markets. These tokens were typically distributed as pack-ins with merchandise or through specialized promotional events, serving as tactile, collectible companions to the core video game experience.

The design of Darkstar reflects the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the era's Square design team, utilizing deep, moody palettes and stark iconography to differentiate the piece from the series' more conventional hero-centric tokens. While the specific artist is often credited to the broader collaborative design studio at Square, the piece remains a sought-after example of the minimalist, symbolic approach the company utilized to expand their world-building beyond the screen.
