Where it came from
Birthing Boughs was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion, a specialized Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically for the Modern format rather than Standard. The card was crafted to support tribal synergies, functioning as a shapeshifting artifact that allows players to create creature tokens of any type, thereby enabling strategies that rely on specific creature-type counts.
The card’s art was illustrated by Dmitry Burmak, who utilized a lush, arboreal aesthetic to represent the card’s thematic connection to the 'Changeling' mechanic. The design was praised by players for its utility in Commander and tribal-focused decks, serving as a versatile tool that bridges the gap between disparate creature types through its equipment-like versatility and token generation.
