Graveshifter

Graveshifter was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set, a unique expansion designed for Magic: The Gathering that introduced cards directly into Modern-legal formats without them passing through standard sets. The set was created to provide a high-power environment for veteran players, blending original card designs with nostalgic callbacks to older mechanics. Within this context, Graveshifter was designed as a Changeling creature, utilizing a shapeshifting mechanic that allows it to possess every creature type simultaneously, thereby interacting with a vast array of tribal synergies found throughout the game's history.

The artwork for Graveshifter was commissioned by illustrator Bram Sels, who sought to capture the unsettling, fluid nature of a creature that exists in a state of constant transition. The visual design emphasizes the creature's ability to shift its physical form, rendered with a moody, atmospheric aesthetic that aligns with the darker themes prevalent in the set's graveyard-centric strategies. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece, valued by players for its ability to recur any creature from the graveyard to the hand, making it a staple in various Commander and tribal-themed decks.
