Where it came from
Bitter Chill was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering in September 2023. The set drew heavy inspiration from classic European fairy tales and folklore, reimagining these tropes through the high-fantasy lens of the Magic multiverse. As a common-rarity enchantment, the card was designed to support the set's core mechanics involving tapping creatures and controlling the battlefield, effectively translating the thematic idea of a freezing, magical slumber into a functional gameplay tool.
The artwork for Bitter Chill was illustrated by Campbell White. The visual direction focuses on the eerie, ethereal atmosphere of Eldraine’s enchanted wilderness, utilizing a cold color palette to evoke a sense of stagnation and magical entrapment. Upon its release, the card was received as a utilitarian draft common, praised for its thematic cohesion and its ability to provide consistent creature interaction within the limited environment of the set.
