What it does

Create a Monster Role token attached to target creature you control. When you do, that creature fights up to one target creature you don't control. (If you control another Role on it, put that one into the graveyard. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample. Creatures that fight each deal damage equal to their power to the other.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Curse of the Werefox is a black enchantment card released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set Wilds of Eldraine. The set marked a return to the plane of Eldraine, a world heavily inspired by European fairy tales and folklore, reimagined through the lens of high fantasy. This specific card leans into the 'wicked role' mechanic introduced in the set, designed to represent the classic fairy tale trope of a curse that physically transforms or hinders a character.

The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro. Monteiro focused on capturing the unsettling, fluid nature of a transformation, blending dark, muted tones with the sharp, eerie silhouette of a lupine figure. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set’s limited environment, praised for its thematic cohesion and the way it mechanically reinforces the set's central narrative of transformation and dark enchantment.
