Where it came from
Bitterthorn, Nissa's Animus was released in 2023 as part of the Growing Threat deck within the March of the Machine Commander set. The card represents a pivotal moment in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse narrative, reflecting Nissa Revane's complex journey and her connection to the Phyrexians during the climatic invasion of the multiverse. Mechanically, the card serves as an Equipment that provides both a power boost and ramp capabilities, embodying the resilient and growth-oriented themes associated with Nissa’s character.
The card's design features art by Marta Nael, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. The illustration depicts the transformed, corrupted essence of the character's signature staff, rendered in a style that balances organic growth with the harsh, metallic influence of the Phyrexians. Upon its release, players and collectors noted the card for its efficient utility in green-aligned Commander decks, finding it a staple for strategies that prioritize board presence and land acceleration.
