Where it came from
Bitterthorn, Nissa's Animus was introduced in the March of the Machine Commander set released in 2023. This equipment card was designed to tie into the overarching narrative of the Phyrexians' multiversal invasion, specifically reflecting the corruption of the planeswalker Nissa Revane. Its mechanics allow for the creation of a Germ token and the ability to equip it to creatures, embodying the theme of Phyrexian assimilation and the transformation of natural forces into tools of conquest.
The art and design were developed to align with the set's high-stakes aesthetic, emphasizing the dark, biomechanical transformation associated with the Phyrexians. As a card within the Commander-focused supplementary set, it was crafted to provide utility for green-aligned decks that leverage creature-heavy strategies. Upon release, it was noted by players for its efficiency in providing both board presence and offensive pressure, fitting neatly into the synergy-focused environment of the Commander format.
