Black Sun's Twilight

Black Sun's Twilight was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card represents a cycle of rare sorceries tied to the Phyrexian theme of conversion and corruption, reflecting the narrative arc where the plane of Mirrodin is transformed into the mechanical nightmare of New Phyrexia. Mechanically, the card serves as both a removal spell and a form of recursion, emphasizing the set's focus on the 'toxic' and 'proliferate' keywords that define the Phyrexian playstyle.

The artwork for this variant was created by the illustrator Richard Kane Ferguson, whose distinctive, painterly style is well-recognized among long-time players. In this piece, Ferguson leans into the visceral, dark aesthetic of the Phyrexians, utilizing muted tones and swirling, chaotic compositions to evoke the sense of encroaching darkness and decay central to the card's lore. The design was well-received by fans of the artist's traditional aesthetic, which contrasts with the cleaner, digital-first art often found in modern card sets.
