Provenance

Where it came from

The Blacker Lotus was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Wizards of the Coast's first foray into a joke-themed, non-tournament-legal expansion. Intended to be a humorous parody of the original Black Lotus from the Alpha set, the card features an identical mana-generating effect but adds the requirement that the player tear the card into pieces to activate its ability, satirizing the extreme collectibility and fragility of its predecessor.

The illustration was provided by Christopher Rush, who also created the iconic artwork for the original Black Lotus. By inviting Rush to reimagine his most famous work, the design team underscored the self-referential nature of the card. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted highlight of the set, offering players a way to engage with the mythology of the game's most expensive rare without the prohibitive cost of an original printing.
