Provenance

Where it came from

The 1999 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own near-exact replicas of the decks used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. These cards were printed with non-standard card backs and gold-bordered frames to distinguish them from regular tournament-legal cards, serving as a snapshot of the competitive meta during the game's formative years.

The Blank Card, assigned collector number 00a within these sets, was included as an inclusion in the deck packaging rather than as a playable tournament component. These cards were designed to function as placeholders or potential proxies, reflecting a time when the game's production was expanding to accommodate both competitive professional play and casual collector interest. They are recognized by enthusiasts as a curiosity of late-nineties trading card design.
